Biography

Murni Khaliesah Binte Uda (b.1997), Singaporean contemporary artist. Having graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with a Diploma in Fine Arts and currently taking her BA(Hons) Fine Arts Degree at LASALLE College of the Arts in 2020, she is working on her developmental studio process regarding the fragments of memories of a lost loved one through obituaries. This originated from her own experience with grief and mourning of her late grandfather whom she had done a series on in 2017.

Murni has worked with performance artists such as Sabrina Koh in her performance art piece titled Dream Market at the Outsider Fashion Art Festival 2017 as well as Lynn Lu in documenting her recent performance titled Be Afraid Only of Standing Still during the Children's Biennale 2017 at National Gallery Singapore.

Artist Statement

Through my practice, I have found my interest in social issues relating to the identity of different individuals, communities or a societies. Recently, I have been exploring deeper into site specific works where I encourage the space, my works as well as the audience to work together to create the most appropriate experience. For my final year project, I am interested on the idea of how humans are so morbidly fascinated by tragic events. Inspired by my very own fascination with the macabre, I have spent time studying the visuals of various morbid situations such as crime scenes as well as horror movies which are created to intrigue us to look longer. Through researching, I recreate these scenes by using food and manipulating them to look like an authentic morbid scene. As a development of the series, I am working with animation to make parts of my photographs move.
